From "Think Outside the Pot.... Meet Judy Gilman-Hines"
by Sara Nunn from the newsletter of Chadwick & Son Orchids, January 2015
"A gifted botanical artist
has captured the exceptional beauty of orchids!" This was a comment made by a patron of Chadwick orchids last month while viewing several framed
paintings hanging in our Belmont store. One of Chadwick's long-time customers, Judy Gilman-Hines, not only loves growing/receiving orchids from our boarding service, but she draws and paints them for others to admire and purchase. A life-long resident of Richmond, Judy became passionate about gardening, art, and travel after raising her family of two sons and two daughters.
Judy has studied a multitude of art mediums, but now works exclusively in watercolor. She shared that her passion for gardening came from her mother, Louise Cochrane (another Chadwick customer who was featured in January 2014), whose mothers WWII "victory garden" became a beautiful rose garden that "wore off on me." Over the years, two of Judy's gardens and homes have been opened for Virginia Historic Garden Week. Today, Judy paints to bring her garden into the house. "In each painting I try to show the very young, mid, and full blossom as well as the aged blossoms."
